The law firm TOSTES ASSOCIADOS ADVOGADOS (TAA) was established in Rio de Janeiro in April 1973 by lawyers Sergio Tostes, Edmundo Lins Neto (one of the most traditional lawyers in Rio de Janeiro) and James Clark.
Sergio Tostes, who holds a master’s degree in Comparative Jurisprudence from New York University and a master’s degree in Law from Harvard Law School, had been a partner in one of the leading Brazilian law firms and a foreign associate in one of the most renowned North American law firms based in Washington, DC.
The intention of combining the international expertise developed by Sergio Tostes with Edmundo Lins Neto’s vast experience in litigation resulted in the formation of a firm capable of acting with equal ease in providing legal advice to clients and in representing them before the Judiciary.
The firm is managed by Sergio Tostes, who, in addition to his work as a lawyer, has held management positions at the OAB/RJ, including the Presidency of the Ethics and Discipline Court, the highest body in the profession that judges the ethical behavior of legal professionals. Sergio Tostes is currently the 1st Vice-President of the Brazilian Institute of Lawyers (IAB).
The firm adopted the name TOSTES ASSOCIADOS ADVOGADOS after the retirement of Edmundo Lins Neto and the arrival of Dr. Olavo Tostes Filho, who was a Judge, Appeals Court Judge, General Inspector of the Court of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro and President of the TRE RJ.
After a major expansion of the firm in the 1990s and 2000s, as a result of the increase in conflicts in Brazil, TAA returned to its original organizational structure, in line with its characteristic of personalized client service.
TOSTES ASSOCIADOS ADVOGADOS is fully dedicated to serving the specific interests and needs of each client, adopting a proactive stance aimed at analyzing and formulating legal solutions.
The uniformity of the performance of its members, respecting individual qualities and characteristics, is the hallmark of the firm, which adopts as a general rule that each client will always be served by a specific partner and his assistants.
The firm has an integrated and efficient service structure both in Brazil and abroad, thanks to operational agreements signed with other law firms specializing in the most diverse areas of law.
At the national level, it has partnerships with professionals from other specialized law firms, such as in the areas of Criminal Law and Trademarks and Patents.
Abroad, the firm maintains active relationships with the most renowned law firms based in the main cities of the United States of America, Europe and Latin America, which allows the firm to produce legal opinions and, when necessary, coordinate and supervise the preparation of external opinions from experts in politics and economics, among other areas.
TAA and its members are associated with several national and international entities, such as the Brazilian Lawyers Institute (IAB), the Brazilian Arbitration Committee (CBAr), the Brazilian Financial Law Association (ABDF), the Brazilian Institute of Finance Executives (IBEF), the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), the Rio Commercial Association (ACRJ), the Union of Law Firms of the State of Rio de Janeiro (SINSA), the British Chamber of Commerce, the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce, the Brazilian American Chamber of Commerce, Inc., the International Section of the American Bar Association and is registered with the National Organization of the Petroleum Industry (ONIP) as a law firm qualified to provide services in the Oil and Gas Sector.
